Barnes Hospital was founded on an endowment established by Robert A. Barnes, a St. Louis wholesale grocer, who died in 1892. The original buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1914. In 1911, a contract was made between the hospital trustees and Washington University School of Medicine affiliating the two institutions, whereby the faculty of the school serves as the medical staff of the hospital. Surgeon (b. 1923). O'Neal received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in 1946. After an internship and residency at Barnes Hospital, O'Neal joined the clinical faculty of his alma mater in 1954, retiring in 1985.
